“A sub-peak of Mount Hood, Illumination Rock is a prominent basalt massif, rising 9,533 feet above sea level. From where it sits, poised between the Zig-Zag and Reid Glaciers, a trained eye can see it from Portland, Oregon on any clear day. When the sun rises in the Pacific Northwest, and crests over the eastern ridge of this living volcano, Illumination Rock is the first feature on the south face of the mountain to see light.
For a brief and glorious moment, it is fully illuminated.”
